INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED CREDENTIALS

The primary quality certification program in the automotive service industry is that of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). ASE certification is widely accepted and recognized as the standard industry credential for professionals in automotive service, parts, collision, truck, school bus and transit bus segments. Auto technicians and other professionals who want to become ASE certified take one or more exams, which are grouped into specialties such as automobile, medium/heavy truck, truck equipment, school bus, collision repair, etc.

The exams stress knowledge of job-related skills. Usually only two out of every three test-takers pass on their first attempt. After passing at least one exam and providing proof of two years of relevant work experience, the test-taker becomes ASE certified. To remain certified, ASE-certified professionals must be retested every five years.

Both secondary and post-secondary institutions can deliver ASE certification, and can be accredited through meeting national standards set by the automotive industry.
