INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED CREDENTIALS

Quality training, education and workforce development in the retail sector is guided by industry skill standards and includes professional credentials developed by the National Retail Federation Foundation (NRF Foundation). The skills standards cover the knowledge, skills and abilities required in retail jobs from entry-level to first-line supervisor to manager positions. The standards address fundamental retail functions, including customer service, sales, retail management, merchandising, operations, human resources and administrative and financial accountability.

The retail skills standards are embedded into training programs provided by companies, colleges and universities or other industry partners. Current and future retail employees can determine their readiness for the demands of retail jobs through an assessment that evaluates critical customer service and sale skills, aptitudes and attitude, and earn professional credentials upon completion of training programs.

The retail food industry has also developed a certificate program that validates retail management competencies. Individuals earn the certificates upon successful completion of the Western Association of Food Chains-endorsed programs at community colleges.
